One of the great innovators of the twentieth century has passed away.

John Marks Templeton was born on November 29, 1912, in Winchester, Tennessee. He graduated with honors from Yale, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and then went on to bring investment insights and opportunities to the everyday investor.

In investing and in life, John Templeton didn’t believe in following the crowd. He was a pioneer with a unique vision and perspective whose hard work, meticulous research and legendary ethical standards were his personal guideposts to success. Sir John introduced his first global mutual fund in 1954, when most people’s concept of investing didn’t extend beyond Wall Street. In 1999, Money magazine called him “arguably the greatest global stock picker of the century.” Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his philanthropic deeds, Sir John was also a profoundly spiritual man and noted author who enriched the lives of millions.

In 1992, the firm he built became part of Franklin Templeton Investments. After the merger, Sir John retired from investment management to devote more of his time to philanthropy. And, although he has not been affiliated with Franklin Templeton since 1996, Sir John’s investment principles continue to guide the Templeton mutual funds today.

We are honored to carry forward both his name and investment ideals, continuing his legacy of helping people of all walks of life participate in investment opportunities around the world.
