Video/Audio/Podcasting

Video

No one likes to sit around waiting for a video to download. To save you time and improve your experience, we use a technique known as "streaming." To access audio or video files on our website, you'll need either RealPlayer or Microsoft Media Player.

If you are a Windows user, you probably already have Microsoft Media Player installed.

If you click one of our video or audio files and it doesn't begin, perhaps your browser isn't equipped with this software. You can download a free version of your choice at the RealPlayer or Microsoft Media Player websites.

What is buffering?

While viewing videos or listening to audio presentations on our site, you may see the word "buffering" on your screen. Either of the streaming media players you use will save data to your local storage for playback when enough information has been assembled for the stream to start.

Typically, you'll notice buffering before a media presentation begins to play. It can also appear during the playback at any time when the presentation's bandwidth requirements are greater than the available bandwidth.

Audio and MP3 Files

To listen to an MP3 audio file, click on the "Download" link and the file will start playing in the audio software associated with this type of file. On computers running Microsoft Windows, Media Player is usually the default player.

To save an MP3 file, right-click on the "Download" link and select 'Save Target as...' or 'Save Link As...' (depending on your browser software) making sure you note the directory where you save the file. Now you can open the file in the audio software you use or transfer the file to a portable audio/MP3 player.

Podcasting

What is podcasting?

A Podcast is a very simple way to have audio files (MP3 files in this case) automatically delivered to your computer via a 'feed'. Simply put, a podcast is like a radio show that you can download onto your computer and listen to whenever you want. Once you subscribe, audio files will be downloaded onto your computer. Once the podcast is on your computer, you can listen to it there using your favorite media player, or transfer it onto your portable media player (MP3 player) to listen to on the move!

How do I subscribe?

If you want to subscribe to our feed, you'll need to get a hold of a podcasting client (software), such as Apple's iTunes or Juice (formally iPodder). There are other software options out there, but these two are well established. Just follow the instructions for these products - they're free, and downloading them is quick and easy. This software will manage your podcast subscriptions as well.

To subscribe to Weekly Market Wrap-Up, copy and paste the podcast address:
https://www.franklintempleton.ca/ca/retail/img/
audio/commentary/wmw/podcast_wmw.xml

into your podcasting software.

How do I subscribe through iTunes?

When you're in iTunes, go to the main navigational menu at the top of the page and click "Advanced", then "Subscribe to Podcast". When the box pops up, simply copy and paste the URL above into the text box. Click "OK", and you're done.

How do I subscribe through Juice? (formally iPodder)

When you're in Juice, go to the main navigational menu at the top of the page and click "Tools", then "Add a Feed". When the box pops up, simply copy and paste the URL above into the text box. Click "Save", and you're done.

What do I need to listen to a podcast?

All you need is a computer with a sound card (if you've ever played music or heard any sound come out of your computer, you have one), media playing software (like Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, iTunes or Winamp) and speakers/headphones.

If you want to take the podcasts with you, you'll need a portable media player like an iPod, ZEN Micro, or any other MP3 player. What you'll need to do is download the podcasts onto your computer and transfer them onto your MP3 player.

What is the difference between downloading a MP3 file and subscribing to a podcast?

When you download an MP3 file, that particular file gets saved onto your computer. It is then up to you to play it, delete it or download another.

When you subscribe to a podcast, a single file gets saved onto your computer and then the next time a new version of the podcast you subscribed to is available, it automatically gets downloaded to your computer. Every time you connect to the internet, your podcasting software will search the web for the latest podcasts you subscribed to, and download them.

The benefit is convenience. If you enjoy a certain podcast, like Weekly Market Wrap-Up, you will always have the latest version of that podcast on your computer without having to look for it every week.
